Genre/Sub-Genre: |
Police procedural (sort of) |
Overall: |
It was a good read which kept me working hard right up to the end - I was never 100% sure of the perpetrator until the end. |
Plotting: |
Complex and satisfying |
Characterisation: |
Vivid - but rather over the top. Hostility abounds, within and between families. The principal character, Frank Mackey, is rather obnoxious and I couldn’t find much empathy with him. He seemed to deserve what he got. I sympathised with his wife, parents and siblings. His attitude towards women is appalling and the way he treats an informant is shocking, not to mention the way he intimidates and manipulates a younger colleague. |
Dialogue: |
Seemed pretty Irish to me. She dishes it out in about the right measure - not too grating. |
Setting and Description: |
A convincing portrayal of Dublin, especially working class Dublin. |
Showing/Telling: |
No problems. |
Readability: |
Easy, rolls along |
Sub-plots: |
The sub-plot with his wife was well-drawn. The sub-plot with his daughter was less convincing - this unpleasant man is such an angel when it comes to her. |
